People travel all over the world but many times do not truly get an authentic and adventurous experience that they wanted. Here’s 5 things to add a little spark to your trip and make it worth while.
1. Go beyond your comfort zone
Everyone is different, some people thrive for adventure and love challenges that push them out of their comfort zones. For others, going to a new and unfamiliar place can be frightening. But going out of your comfort zone can be one of the best things to happen to you especially when traveling. Although scary, try as much as you can to venture out to a new place, meet new people, try something you have never done before because those are the things that you are going to remember the most. If you are nervous and don’t know how to go about it then read about it. There are so many great blogs and resources out there that can be utilized to do some research and find some hidden gems. If that is still too big of a risk, start out small. How well do you know your city? Travel isn’t always getting on a plane and sipping Pina Colada’s on the beach in Mexico; sometimes you can find great adventures right in your backyard.
2. Visit not only the touristy areas but the local secrets as well
Most cities are going to have some touristy aspect to them. Those are all cool places to see because otherwise they wouldn’t be tourist attractions. But everyone knows that there is more to a city than just a tourist attraction. Go down some streets, walk away from the the crowds, and I’m sure you will discover some of the hidden secrets of your destination. If you are not sure where to start, the best place is to ask a local. Ask them what their favorite thing about the city is and ask for recommendations for non touristy attractions and places. Do keep in mind safety as well, some places are not safe to venture out on own, and do some research before deciding to check something out. But there are people who love their homes and are happy to show you around, all you have to do is ask.
3. Try the local food
Food is one of the best parts about going on trips and every place is guaranteed to have some great dishes. Many countries are unique and have many of their own specialties which I recommend researching before your trip. One way to assure that you have the absolute best is by venturing away from the touristy areas because the further away the better the food. A lot of food places by tourist attractions not only hype up their prices but the food is not as good as it can be. I also found some of the best places to be the little mom and pop shops or the vendors on the street. The food is usually made by someone in the family and you are always getting authentic homemade recipes which are hard to come by when you are going to a well know restaurant. Now don’t get me wrong, I love love love going out to eat at restaurants and some of those could be the hot spots, but just don’t get tricked into hopping into the first place you see because the cute waiter motions you in (been there and let me tell you the food was not up to par).
4. Take pictures
This might seem like a given but to many it is not. A lot of people either forget or do not want to be those people that take a million pictures. Trust me, you are going to want to take pictures and lots of pictures. Yes, memories last a lifetime but there is nothing better than being able to relive those memories later on through pictures. I always say, I don’t care if I look stupid and I don’t care if I am that person that’s taking a million pictures, because I treat each location as if I won’t come back again. I want to be able to look back and take in those moments and have those memories be brought back to life when looking at photos. But also take the time to enjoy the scenery. If there is a pretty sunset or if you are sitting on the beach, or just strolling through an old town, take it all in as well. Sometimes you need to just be in the moment and be there without the lens of the camera.
5. Meet someone new
One of my favorite things is knowing people from all over the world and what better way to do that than meeting people when you are traveling the world. Locals and other travelers most of the time feel the same and want to get to know people too. I encourage you to go out and have conversation with the locals and other travelers and hear their experiences. Not only will you learn something new, but you could make a friend for life and be able to visit them in the future.
These are just a few simple little things that can make your trip a great one. There are many things to do and experience on your adventures, so go out there and explore. Beware though, because once the travel bug bites, there is no coming back from it, but I wouldn’t have it any other way 😉
